Mrs. Carey's Fruit Cake

Posted 11-23-2010 at 04:06 PM by MerryCarey (MerryCarey's Blog)

Some of you may know that my father passed away in October, leaving me the last surviving member of the family I grew up in. It also leaves me the sole owner and guardian of a well-worn index card that bears a typed recipe with handwritten amendments, and is stained with baking ingredients and years of use.

Fruitcake was never a joke in our house. I suppose I was in high school before I was aware that in many households, Christmas fruitcake was a despised object of ridicule. But not the fruitcake my parents made from a recipe passed down through my family. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, various friends and neighbors never failed to remind my parents: “Don’t forget to save me some fruitcake again this year!”

On Thanksgiving Day, our kitchen was always busy—but not with turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. Instead, our kitchen table groaned with ingredients and a huge roasting pan in which my mother and father compounded the batter...

When Did I get Old?

I sit here tonight with this one thought, when did I get old? I have in recent weeks decided to grow a goatee, which I do every now and then, it has been growing in and I noticed I have quite a few white hairs in it now, it is normally as red as Kris Kringle's from Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, but the white hairs just stick out to me. Watching part of the American Music Awards last night and I had never heard of most of these bands. The American Pie movies aren't funny to me any longer, I would rather watch a documentary over a sitcom, and I read the labels on food containers now. I know as I will be entering my late 30's in just over a month I am closer to 50 than I am to 20. Ughh!

Perplexed

I must admit it. I am perplexed about certain decisions in my life. The main decision concerns my job. I feel blessed to have a job yet the company I work for has not been the most caring company I must say.

I guess I can't complain too much because I do work at home after all. However, I think with any job a part of the compensation should be respect and a sense that your employer values you and your services.

I am a medical transcriptionist and have been a transcriptionist for 17 years. In essence I listen to doctors dictate and I type what they say about patients. It is neither as hard nor as easy as it sounds. It just takes practice and I find though I have been doing it a long time I never get to the point where it is not challenging.

The company I work for is in Santa Monica, California. The problem I am having is in regard to an incident which happened last Sunday, November 14, 2010.

A Christmas Reunion

Posted 11-22-2010 at 02:32 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I've got to be the luckiest man alive to have the contacts I do at the North Pole. Every year around this time I hear from Santa, Elf Ernest, Elf Ed Zachary and others from the North Pole as preparations are made to once again track Santa.

You know the traditions we have in tracking Santa but still I get excited every year when that phone rings and we start talking about plans for the days leading up to Christmas. They really are exceptional people and I'm not saying that because I want Santa to stuff my stocking with something special this year.

Folks think that I play Santa here or that I am Elf Ernest or that I am the extremely brilliant Elf Ed Zachary.

(Oh, how I wish. Elf Ed Zachary receives at least one or two marriage proposals a year, that's how awesome this elf is).

But when we get together to talk about what's new I get excited for Christmas like nothing else. The email from kids starts to really roll in once these guys...
