Pictures as Christmas Presents

Posted 03-10-2013 at 11:35 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

For the past several years I have been deeply involved in digitizing old family photos. I've worked on digitizing all the pictures we have taken since we were married, many of the photos taken during the 50 years my parents have been married and the collection of pictures my grandparents amassed during their lifetime.

The process is not an easy one. Even with technology that allows for quick work in scanning and even improving upon old photos the sheer numbers of pictures we take in families makes it a daunting task.

After about five years of effort and thousands of images later I can report some lessons learned that I'd like to share:

1. Everyone loves the old pictures. Everyone wants them. That is what makes me think old pictures are perfect as Christmas presents. Handing them over on a CD, DVD or thumb drive might not be glamorous but it is a gift that raises nothing but possibilities. Digital pictures can be printed, easily shared and put on...

The Raging Storm - An Exercise In Creative Writing

Posted 03-07-2013 at 11:50 AM by caninemom3

Taking a beginning writing class may sound like a piece of cake, however, I have learned it is not. I have now completed lesson 5 of 12 for my class and the assignment was to practice what we have learned so far about writing a creative story. Though this story is quite weak, I wanted to post it here for my Christmas family to read. I hope it will give some measure of entertainment to your day. As always, all comments are welcome !! xo

The Raging Storm

She was just a young 17-year-old girl sitting quietly in her parentsí living room. As she sat she was chilly and moved closer to the warm and cozy fire she had built. It was the season of spring but it was still winter in her soul. She had been feeling so sad and gloomy for the past few days and each hour seemed to magnify her already dour mood. Outside and in her soul a thunderstorm was brewing. The only difference was the storm in her soul was an emotional one. It was so...

Holding On To My Baby

Posted 03-02-2013 at 10:18 AM by caninemom3

A lot of people know that I love animals. I have three canines and three felines who are the loves of my life. There is nothing to me like the love of my furchildren. They are always loving unconditionally and expect nothing in return other than the basics of food and some measure of love back, which is much different than most humans I have encountered.

One of my canines is named Wishbone. He is just a little guy, I call him my "little man." Wishbone is a mix of Miniature Pinscher and Dachshund. He has a little stump for a tail and he is black, or he was until he started getting old. His once shiny coat is now salt and pepper gray and his once all black face is now mostly white. He is 16-1/2 years old and has some health concerns. Wish has been at my side through the very worst of times and the very best. He has seen many other furchildren become ill and taken away never to return. He knows when I am sad, he knows when I need love, his gentle soul knows when I...

My Magical Book

Posted 03-01-2013 at 07:33 PM by caninemom3
Updated 03-13-2013 at 08:16 PM by caninemom3

Books are always magical to me. Through books I have been to many places and experienced many things that I otherwise would never have had the chance to. I have been to Tudor England in the court of Henry VIII as he ruled with all the earmarks of the true tyrant he was and who fell in "love" quicker than the weather changes. I have been to the Holy Land and witnessed the Savior's birth. I have journeyed far to Hogwarts School and watched a forlorn and rejected boy become a confident and strong young man battle the ultimate evil for what is right and good. I, myself have read over and over again the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge, a man so mean and miserly that even a blind man's dog ran from him. To my pleasant surprise through much persistence of others he finally achieved his reclamation to the nice person he had very well hidden deep inside.

Books mean so much to me words cannot describe. They have been my companions when I had none; they have been my friend when...
