Tricks and Treats

Some more lunchtime poetry....

Tricks and Treats
By V. Rodney Harrison Jr. – 10-3-2010

Chimneys at work with warmth in their scent,
Brightly colored leaves freely dancing in the wind.
With burnt skies of orange becoming more dim,
The echoes of the day are now coming to an end.

The cry of a black cat that almost pains the ear,
A goblin dashing by with great speed.
Spirits roaming freely up and down the lanes,
Enough to make ones skin crawl and bleed.

This is the night for sneaky tricks of all sorts,
Of bobbing for juicy apples with glee.
With great disguises to confuse and surprise,
In hopes to venture on a tasty sweets spree.

The eerie sounds of old haunted dwellings,
Give way to children’s laughter and screams.
Of excited first timers surveying the streets,
Constructing their plans and thinking up schemes.

Tonight’s prize is...

A Very Special Christmas Gift

Rodmonster has inspired me !! He has posted absolutely BEAUTIFUl poems that he wrote. My sister wrote this poem for me 12 years ago the year our mother passed away and I wanted to share it:

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO MY SISTER

When branches are bare and the sky is clear
It's near my sister's favorite time of year
When days are short, she comes alive
'Cos in her heart, she'll always be five

When Christmas carols fill the night
I see her eyes glow clear and bright
'Cos Santa Claus is on his way
Listen closely and you'll hear his sleigh

Peace on earth, good will to all
And to all creatures great and small
We celebrate that blessed night when
God sent His Son to set the world right

My sister to me has always meant love
She can be feisty as a lion or gentle as a dove
Christmas has always been her special time
And because of her it is also mine

A Season for Joy

Posted 09-30-2010 at 10:39 AM by rodmonster

A Season for Joy
By V. Rodney Harrison – 9-30-2010

In the frosty distance one can faintly hear,
The soft ring of harmonic bells.
Chiming and dancing ever so gingerly,
On stallions trotting through the swells.

Sleigh rides with snuggled lovers,
Drifting gracefully through a snow covered trail.
Warm mitten covered hands gently clasped,
As their adoring hearts begin to sail.

Light fluttering flakes fall from the night sky,
Mixed with shimmering stars from above.
Melting swiftly on the rosy cheeks,
Of those riding who are blissfully in love.

From the sleigh one may catch a glimpse,
Of children gliding over a frozen stream.
Joyfully laughing at one another,
As they race to be the winning team.

Or perhaps the site of an open fire,
Crackling in the wind with chestnuts alight.
Family and friends with steaming cocoa in hand,
Singing...

A Knock at the Door from Autumn

Posted 09-28-2010 at 10:02 AM by rodmonster

A Knock at the Door from Autumn

Like clockwork it has arrived,
The distinct scent of vanishing jade.
Leaves dancing as they fall from high,
Vibrantly colored before they fade.

The brisk breeze is dashing all about,
Carrying the plush foliage to-and-fro.
Grand peaks of color encircle the trees,
As the burnt dusk begins to glow.

Seasonal gourds of all sizes and shapes,
Cover vine laden plains as far as one can see.
Shadows cast from the sinking auburn sun,
Via rays of light through the sagging bare trees.

A faint aroma from chimneys afar,
Trickles through the end of the day.
Giving a sense of warmth from deep within,
Evoking childhood memories of yesterday.

As this twilight arrives with a sea of stars,
As it has done each and every year before.
With much content in my tranquil soul,
I welcome Autumn knocking at my door…

Huh?

Tags nice guy

Why does the old saying "nice guys finish last" seem to strike a nerve with me? I have thought about this in the past and never seem to think of a good reason. I try to be the best person I can be everyday, but I deal with anxiety and shyness that may make me look or act aloof, I try not to when I think about it but circumstances change quickly and I can't be on guard all the time. My life (like many others) has had its deal of trying and happy times, and reading about all that is going on with others on this site, life changes in an instant. When I meet people, I just want to be known as a nice guy, I still use my please and thank yous as often as the situation calls, and I try to instill that quality in my boys. I know my shyness has a lot to do with how people think of me, since that is the first impression of me people get, it takes a lot to loosen me up and when I haven't seen a friend in a long time that shell just covers me back up and it takes just as long for me to loosen...
