A Clumsy Christmas Eve Remembered

Posted 09-19-2011 at 12:48 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

We have so many crazy memories of Christmas Eve that it is hard some times to account for them all. A neighbor next door to me reminded me of a moment I failed to tell anyone about -- because it was a bit embarrassing.

About ten years ago my son asked for a drum set for Christmas.

A wise elf admonished us early in our marriage to always clear a wishlist to Santa with Mom first -- if Mom didn't approve, Santa wouldn't deliver.

There was just no way my son was getting drums. He was eight, all boy, and prone to, uh, enthusiastic activities. We had not one but two little girls under the age of three and life was chaotic enough.

No drums. Mom said no. I said no. And Santa never heard the request.

But a neighbor did and a few days before Christmas, as they cleaned out their basement in advance of a house move, he brought us over a set of used drums. This good man was a musician with years of experience and when I...

"Of All The Charlie Browns In The World....."

Posted 09-17-2011 at 09:17 PM by caninemom3

The most wonderful time of the year is upon us again. Christmas time. The lights, the feeling, the magic in the air that you can actually breath in. Most everyone in my Christmas family are looking forward to the Season of Seasons. I love Christmas absolutlely and totally adore it yet this evening as much as I want to think about it and feel the excitement like everyone else, I cannot.

Frustration. Anger. Sadness. Hopelessnes. Uncertainty. Fear. Regret.

These feelings are not the feelings of someone who is looking forward to Christmas. Instead they are feelings which indicate and have indicated for many years the need for a drastic change in lifestyle. A change I am not brave enough in any way, shape or form to bring about.

I have spoken of this in the past and for those who have read my blog, you know what and who I am referring to.

The problem is I feel powerless to effect the changes that I know in the long run would be best...

A Friend In Need...

As many you may know I am a worry wart, I care much for people close to me and for the people on this site if they are quiet for to long. I have some thoughts on my friend who is in his mid-thirties and seemingly has no prospects for work or love. He is a great guy, who cares for everyone, and wears his heart on his sleeve, and will do anything to help us or anyone out. He lives at home with his parents and plays video games until the sun comes up, then sleeps until noon or later. He has had jobs where he has excelled at, but never lasted at either by choice or lay off, most recently he left his job because his car won't pass inspection. His car has been abandoned in our driveway for the last 2.5 months. He has had girlfriends but he has dumped them early on and hasn't gone out dating close to 7 years now. I worry about him because there is so much to experience in life and when your life is lived through a video game, you really don't see much. I admit I use to play video games at least...

Santa Won't Let Me Down?

I am getting the feeling that Santa Claus may not be in existence for my oldest much longer, which is killing me right now and forces me to put my thought in my blog. He is putting all his faith in a gift from Santa that my wife and I cannot afford. While I was tucking him in to bed the other night I asked him what he thinks he wants for Christmas this year? He starts blurting out the usual things like some action figures, books, video games, and so on, when I saw a light go on in his little head and he said he wants Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and a Nintendo 3DS. I told him flat out that Mommy and Daddy cannot afford that this year, and then he said "that's ok, Santa will bring it for me." (In my house we go by the rule Santa brings one present, the rest are from Mom & Dad) My heart sank as soon as he said that, he will be anticipating that will be under the tree from Santa only to be disappointed by it not being there. We bought a Nintendo Wii and put it on Layaway...

The Smell Of Rain

Posted 09-15-2011 at 12:12 PM by caninemom3

This brings tears to my eyes every time I read it and I wanted to share it with my Christmas family.

A cold March wind danced around the dead of night in Dallas as the doctor
walked into the small hospital room of Diana Blessing. Still groggy from
surgery, her husband David held her hand as they braced themselves for the
latest news.

That afternoon of March 10, 1991, complications had forced Diana, only
24-weeks pregnant, to undergo an emergency cesarean to deliver the couple's
new daughter, Danae Lu Blessing.

At 12 inches long and weighing only one pound and nine ounces, they already
knew she was perilously premature. Still, the doctor's soft words dropped
like bombs. "I don't think she's going to make it," he said, as kindly as
he could. "There's only a 10-percent chance she will live through the
night, and even then, if by some slim chance she does make it, her future...
