Christmas and Politics

Posted 11-01-2010 at 05:27 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I have a friend who is my political opposite who, for the purposes of this post, I will call Paul. That, of course, is not his real name but I have no doubts my family and friends who might read this will know who I am speaking about. I think the reasons why I don't use his real name will be obvious as I share the story.

I'm not sure when Paul and I became friends. We lived years ago fairly close to each other and I think we might have first met at a school event we had in common with our kids when we lived in California. In any event, we're about as different as two people can be.

We have had many an intellectual conversation about life, the universe and everything including a fair share of politcal sparring. He's as atheist as the day is long and I am, as he likes to say, as Mormon as a dude living in Utah can be (he knows how I deplore being classified as a Utah Mormon).

Our friendship has always been very warm though. He's got great kids,...

A Brief Moment Of Peace

This has been one of the most stressful weeks I can recall in a long time.

To Start with I am a "pet parent" and one of my kitties is in the hospital. It seems she has some problems with her liver and the doctor wanted to admit her for IV fluids to bring down her bilirubin. He said she had a lot of biliary sludge and that this sometimes happens with older kitties.

On top of that we FINALLY got our furnace installed. What a blessing this is. It was quite stressful though as the guys who put it in of course had to run in and out quite a bit and every time left the doors hanging open. Now, we had our other 2 kitties in a room where they could not get out but after several hours we could not stand their cryiing any longer and so told the workers they HAD to CLOSE THE DOORS behind them. Of course, they did not heed anything we said.

I am glad to say, that no kitties escaped and the furnace is in !! Thank God above !! Last Winter was an...

Hi all!!

Posted 10-27-2010 at 06:13 AM by HollyJells

I know, it has been a long bit since I blogged BUT I do have a good reason. Life got in the way HAHAHAHA.
Halloween is upon us here and soon enough it will be Thanksgiving and then the glorious season of reds, greens, blues, silvers, and all those colors we associate with Christmas and the other happy wintery Holidays. This past year has been wonderful with some saddness thrown in but we got through it unscathed. It has been a busy yet fulfilling year.
We finally got the big trees (except for 2) removed from the fornt yard and new sod laid. I will be posting pics in a few weeks once we get all our holiday deco up for the winter. I have taken time off from college to pursue some employment and as of right now I am still jobless . I will make it though.

The annual ornament exchange and card exchange will be getting underway in a few weeks and I am so very thrilled. I love getting all those beautiful cards and the ornaments are absolutely fantastic. I have...

I Cannot Wait

Posted 10-25-2010 at 09:23 AM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)

I am ready to break out the decorations, I am ready for a turkey dinner, I am just ready.
I feel on top of the game this year, I am not feeling overwhelmed by the thought of shopping, or of getting the house decorated. I just want to get everything done early this year and really enjoy the WHOLE season, just listening to Christmas music or watching all my Christmas DVD's this year, the last 2 we have not been able to watch them all with all going on, but this year I will. I cannot wait until the local radio stations go Christmas music 24/7 and I fall asleep every night listening to it (one of my favorite things). My wife has been making a new Christmas cookie the last 2 weekends and she plans to do every weekend right through the holidays, I know my earlier blogs I was sort of depressed about things but that has passed and now once again the season cannot get here fast enough and as of midnight we will be under 60 days.
I am not only dreaming of a white Christmas, I am dreaming...

Are You a Spug?

Posted 10-19-2010 at 02:42 PM by MerryCarey (MerryCarey's Blog)

This is my maiden voyage as a blogger. This time it's a trip back in time to 1912 to visit a little-known chapter in Christmas history.

Are you a Spug?

Well, let’s see… Do you believe that it is foolish to join in giving Christmas presents to those higher up? Do you believe that it is vulgar to give Christmas presents only because they are given to you? Do you believe that it is wicked to give Christmas presents without love and common sense?

In 1912, if you answered “yes” to these questions, you had what it took to become a Spug. You could get together with four others who shared your beliefs to form a Spug Squad, choose a captain, and write to the Spug headquarters in New York City for membership cards and official Spug pins. As a full-fledged Spug, your mission would be to “make as many converts as possible,” and “to eliminate by co-operative effort the custom of giving indiscriminately at Christmas, and to further in every way the true Christian...
