Writing Christmas -- Kelly Ann's Christmas Story Serial

Posted 10-13-2010 at 12:57 PM by jimmyolsen (Writing Christmas)

Kelly Ann is doing something very cool with her mmc blog. She's writing fiction. In particular, she's writing a piece in tune with the Christmas season.

Like every writer I've ever met, Kelly Ann has hit a snag in the plot of her story, and she's wondering what comes next.

She's set the scene. We have a family, they're a bit pensive, there's a threat of snow, and now they're in the car.

Already she's made some great choices.

First, she's chosen to tell her story through the eyes of a child. At Danny's age, the world is still a strange and magical place. But we see he's on the cusp of losing that sense of wonder. He's more into his DS than the family Christmas outing.

Important point, that. Why? Because it shows us her POV (point of view) character is at a crossroads. He's about to choose a path that will have a lot to say about the person he becomes.

Second, she's dropped him in a car.

I Talked To God Last Night

Posted 10-13-2010 at 12:26 PM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)

As some of you know, I was raised in a house where my mom was a minister, it was a different life where we had to learn to be second fiddle to the congregation sometimes. In a way I feel I lost valuable time with my mother that can never be recovered, yet it was her calling, a calling that had her always helping people as her profession was a registered nurse. Of course it was the cancer that took her life away from this Earth at too young of an age. I continued praying through much of the early 90's but somehow I developed an anger with God and religion in general and I turned my back on it, I haven't gone to a church service in 10 years, except for the occasional wedding or funeral. I did not even want to get married in a church, but my wife did and I agreed to do it. I do not want my children to be raised without knowledge of God, because even though I may not be the religious type, I believe God is there and know Jesus is all around us. I dated a girl in the mid 90's who never heard...

Falling off the Christmas Bandwagon

Posted 10-12-2010 at 09:15 AM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)

I feel as if I have fallen off the "Christmas Bandwagon" over the last few days with the way things are going on in my professional life right now. I am the type of person who once I leave work I forget about it for the most part, and leave it behind. The way things are going right now I am struggling, everyones hours are being cut and we are doing the work of 3-4 people including what we are suppose to be doing, my hours are all over the place and I only get 2 days off in a row if I request for it. The former manager was fired after 18 years, and the new one is a person I worked with years ago whom I felt never really liked me, and for the most part I get along with everybody. The fear of layoffs is in the air, even though they are just false rumors people still have that fear. Right now I am having a hard time looking forward to the holidays not knowing my situation, will I have the vacation time, or will I not. I talked about it back in the spring with a former manager, but...

Almost Home and Almost Christmas

Posted 10-11-2010 at 08:14 AM by kgstyles

As some of you know, I have been in Afghanistan for the whole entire year. What a year it has been. I started my deployment in Camp Atterbury, Indiana back in early November 2009 and will finally be leaving here in less than 2 weeks. This has been the longest deployment I have ever been on and by far the most challenging, both mentally and physically (I've been to Iraq twice). From target practice for 6 hours in -15 degree weather holding a metal weapon and you can't feel your fingers enough to pull the trigger and you keep missing because of that fact but you have to keep at it until you hit all the targets, to baking in 120 heat pulling security in a mud hut village for 3 hours with 120 extra pounds of gear on to staying up for 24+ hours at a time due to attacks on the base and needing to man the machine gun bunkers and continue to do everyday normal duty, were the physical challenges. Not seeing my 4 kids since October 2009, missing all of their birthdays this year, losing 2 awesome...

Seasons of Change

Seasons of Change
By V. Rodney Harrison Jr. 10-07-2010

Fresh buds of flowers blooming throughout,
With a scent of honeysuckles in the warm wind.
Color filled rainbows escort mists of rain,
While blue birds with their nests begin to tend.

A cool plunge in a stream as the sun pours down,
Cold homemade ice cream for all that desire.
A faint trace of freshly trimmed lawns in the air,
Beach nights of friends and cool drinks by a fire.

Leaves falling gracefully to the cool brisk ground,
With vibrant colors full of orange, yellow and red.
The days light grows shorter to auburn shaded dusks,
Chilly nights accompany a harvest moon over head.

Chimneys at full throttle keeping those inside so warm,
Homes covered from top to bottom with twinkling lights.
Freshly baked cookies being happily consumed,
Snow falling softly through the silence of starry nights.
