Year Round Christmas Spirit

Posted 08-04-2010 at 09:59 AM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)

As I have started to see the Christmas stuff begin to filter slowly into the stores, it makes me think of how people always complain it is "too early to think of Christmas." I know people are entitled to their opinions, but these people seem to be vociferous in theirs, and make it known enough where in the past they made a Hallmark store move their ornament collection to the back of the store until a more appropriate time. What is that appropriate time though? All of us who share in this wonderful website would probably like to see a little Christmas section in each store year round, to help fill a need of that joyous season. I start to get that excitement when I see the first signs Christmas enter the stores, I feel a warmth of happiness like when you see a loved one you haven't seen in a long while. These first signs are so important especially during these long hot days of summer, it makes you realize Christmas is just over four months away. I have worked with people in the...

Let Hunting Season Begin!

Posted 08-02-2010 at 12:13 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I get the itch every year around this time. It is a season fraught with tradition and precision -- everything has to be done "just so".

I'm not sure which is greater: going for the kill or just preparing for the hunt?

No -- not the deer hunt. (I did that once, city boy that I am, and can testify of the legendary tales told by the campfire and likewise the less-than-legendary acts committed while on the prowl). Frankly,I don't have the stomach for killing animals and have never again done it.

The hunt of which I speak is the yearly search for the Christmas ornament I will send to my yet-unkown ornament exchange partner.

After doing this for a few years I've decided there is real art in the hunt for an ornament. It is not like you can go pick out Martha Stewart's best and send it off feeling good about yourself.

No way. The ornament exchange is an intimate deal. You have to get to know your trading partner and learn...

August 3

Posted 08-01-2010 at 09:10 PM by xmas365 (Christmas, Life, and Family)

Tuesday being August 3, has seemed to be an important day in my life, 3 big or major events have occurred on that date. The first one, probably the least important of the three happened on August 3, 1997, I had quit my job on June 30 that year with nothing lined up, but I had to quit for peace of mind. I was an assistant manager at a fast food restaurant, and if you have ever done that job you know no matter what you do it is not good enough for anybody, and I couldn't handle it anymore so I gave a notice three weeks in advance. I went through the month of July with no job, but looking. On Aug. 3 I got a job at the place I was hoping, I got hired as an assistant manager with a video store, and 1 year later I met my wife at that store.
The second big happening probably one of the top four moments in my life occurred on August 3, 2000. It is the day I got engaged to my wife, we were in Lake George, NY on a vacation, I had bought the ring a few weeks before, planning to ask her during...

Peacefulness On A Hot Summer Day

Posted 07-31-2010 at 07:31 PM by caninemom3
Tags mass

Today was such a wonderful day. A very satisfying day. Earlier in the day I went grocery shopping and ran errands with my husband. Later on, since I am Catholic, I attended Mass. Now, as a Catholic I am SUPPOSED to attend Mass every week, but I don't. No excuses here. I am at fault and I admit it. When I got to church it was so peaceful inside. After making my apologies to my Heavenly Father a great calm came over me. There was time before Mass started so I was able to sit and reflect somewhat. It seemed to me that perhaps instead of all this fighting humans do about which demonination is right or wrong or which religion is right or wrong, maybe we should be focusing on the really important factor - GOD. All this fighting is contrary to His message - LOVE ONE ANOTHER. To me God has always, always meant love AND TOLERANCE. To me, Jesus was extremely tolerant in his Earthly mission. Can you imagine if He had not been ?? I can't explan it, and you will probably think I am a little crazy and...

An Unwelcome Anniversary

Posted 07-30-2010 at 03:54 AM by caninemom3

On August 12 of this year it will be the commemoration of an anniversary I wish had never happened, the death of my beloved big brother, Andy. It will be 33 years this year since Andy passed and to tell you the truth, I still miss him as much now as I did then. Andy was just 31 years of age. A good guy and a bit of a rable rouser. His favorite band was the Rolling Stones. In fact, I can still see him sitting in our parents' living room listening to the Stones with headphones while singing along ! He didn't realize that what was being heard by the rest of us could be likened to a Tom cat wanting to mate. We were very close. He was always very protective of me and let me know that he would be here for me no matter what, except that he no longer is. That Summer day, August 12, 1977, it was very hot. Andy was going through a period of being down on his luck. He had been laid off from his job and was back living with our parents. His wife had kicked him out and was seeking a divorce. Very often...
