Tradition of trick-or-treating

Posted 10-26-2012 at 07:35 AM by lauriebear

TRADITION OF TRICK-OR-TREATING

The tradition of trick-or-treating isn't quite as old as the holiday itself, but it's certainly been around for a while. Let's look at how this unique custom evolved.

All Soul's Night:
In Britain, people celebrated All Soul's Day for many years. Poor people went begging, and the middle-class wives handed out special treats known as Soul Cakes. When a beggar was given a Soul Cake, he promised to say a prayer for the dead. This practice was known as going "a-souling".
In Ireland, rather than begging for cakes, the poor went about asking for donations of eggs, butter and other food in preparation for a festival honoring St. Columba. In County Waterford, the night was known as "mischief night."

OMG!!! I haven't even caught up but I had to tell you all what happened last night... Hubby & I flipping channels waiting for the Yankee / Tiger game (that was ultimately canceled) but anyway at 8:00 PM my door bell rings, I live in a condo that is gated so we figured it was just one of our neighbors, I go to the door and nobody is there!!! BUT!!!! Wait for it........ A plastic bowl filled with candy and little nicknacks with a note stating You've Been Booed!!!! The note reads....

You've Been Boo-ed!

The phantom ghost has come to town
To leave some goodies... I see you've found.
If you wish to make this a happier fall...
Continue this greeting, this phantom call.

First, post this Phantom where it can be seen,
And leave it there until Halloween.
This will...

Autumn Memories

Posted 09-23-2011 at 10:00 PM by caninemom3

Today was the first day of Autumn and the weather was perfect ! It was a bit rainy and gloomy but as I emerged from the house to go run some errands, it seemed as though there was a kind of glow about the trees and a magic starting to awaken in the air. When I was very young, perhaps 4 or 5, my dad started taking me with him every year in the Fall to go and look at the candidates for that year's Jack O' Lantern. We would go to many pumpkin patches, sometimes farms until I found just that special one. Sometimes if I could not decide, he would buy all the ones I liked. I held his hand as we went from pumpkin to pumpkin, he being 51 or so and me barely being beyond toddler. Of course, I ALWAYS had to name my...
