A Furious Argument Over Stuffing

Posted 11-12-2012 at 02:54 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

We're getting a great kick out of the many whiners out there complaining of Christmas creep. For some reason folks see the Christmas decorations and hear the Christmas music of early November as some kind of slight to Thanksgiving. We don't see it that way. Thanksgiving is just a part of our Christmas.

We're experiencing something different this year. After having worked for years in a way that prevented us from spending any of our holidays with extended family I'm taking vacation time this year and packing up the kids and going over the river and through the woods and through the woods and through the woods (900 miles by car) to Grandmother's house all the way to California for Thanksgiving.

This is a wildly popular branch of the family. The kids get to hang with their cousins and there will, in addition to the great food, be plenty of laughter and tears.

But for as wonderful as this will no doubt be as an event there is a storm of sorts brewing....

The Heart of the Christmas Fan

Posted 10-17-2012 at 10:22 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

Some times this job is just too sweet.

I love this time of year because it is when the Christmas fanatic comes out of the woodwork. And I usually learn a lot more about Christmas when they do.

Don't get me wrong: there are year round Christmas crazies out there. Christmas never really goes away for those of us who love it so much. But sometimes people are afraid to show it because there is a loud and opinionated minority out there that mocks someone who walks a block out of their way to see a lighted Christmas tree.

But there's something about October. The fans come out and begin to share those things that makes Christmas work for them. And there are so many specialties out there.

Take, for example, the story of Lou, shared over at our new site at ShowUsYourChristmas.com. His love of Christmas drove him to festively decorate a 50-foot trailer in lights and decor and hit the road in the dead of winter dressed as Santa to bring a little...

The World's Largest Christmas Party -- Again!

Posted 09-16-2012 at 11:20 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

Tucked away in a dark corner of the Merry Forums is a discussion area off-limits to most the merry faithful -- a private little get away for the Christmas Crew.

I set the area up years ago. I was attempting to follow the advice of forum managing webmasters who ran big communities. We weren't big, by any stretch of the imagination, but I thought we'd get there and we would need a place to discuss all the thorny issues of running a public gathering place.

Alas, our deliberations over forum member fights, spammers, grossly over-opinionated posters and other nasty elements so often associated with Internet communities never really took root in our crew areas. Folks at Christmas, it appears, are altogether too nice. By and large we don't have many problems to deal with.

So our crew area has become more of a giant brain-storming area for My Merry Christmas. Our prolific Christmas Crew -- the very cream of our membership, in fact -- come by when they...

More Than Just a Day

Posted 09-11-2012 at 12:20 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

Over on Facebook I'm seeing lots of images and reminders of 9/11. Most of the sentiments say something to the effect of "Never Forget".

That seems a little too little when it comes to talking about that day. I forget how small my children were then and how young so many folks I know now were on that fateful day.

Maybe it makes me sound old. But I just cannot forget that day. And I think it is important we all share and archive our personal stories from that day.

Everyone has a personal story from that day. You didn't have to be in New York to be affected by it.

For me, the Internet makes the world so much smaller. And it was so true that day, too.

I was in Utah and it was a busy morning. I was preparing for what was called then my "Christmas Meeting". I worked for a retailer whose business was tied to a successful Christmas selling season and it was the biggest meeting of the year for me.

I was new with...

Movin' on Up, Moving on In...

Posted 07-08-2012 at 11:40 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

It has been a time of unprecedented change for us. But things are starting to look up after what has admittedly been a horrific year.

Here's the outside of our new country home...

This home is located some 100 miles from our home of the past 12 years. It is located in the country, some 2 miles away from a Pepperidge Farms facility that manufactures fishies (my kids insist this is an important detail and "new feature" in their lives).

It is a pretty drastic change from our humble little city track home. We're leaving a community of 90,000 in a suburb of Salt Lake City for a tiny farming community of 2,400. The absence of traffic noise, the presence of country aromas (cows), and the brilliance of the stars at night are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the change this is for us.

The house has a very park-like setting...

We have...
