Don't Miss this Podcast

Posted 11-16-2013 at 03:25 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

For weeks now we've been working on the next episode of the Merry Podcast.

Quite honestly, it has made my Christmas of 2013 to do this.

We get lots of submissions year round from artists looking to get airplay on Merry Christmas Radio and Kringle Radio. Some of it is great, some not so great.

As we've looked to feature new artists and songs this year we have gathered more new music than we ever have before. I don't know why that is but there is just a bumper crop this year.

In fact, there's more music than we can fit in on just one podcast.

For a couple of weeks I've been whittling it down, trying to find the right mix to feature.

Quite by accident I noticed something today -- we have contributing artists from the USA, Canada, the UK, Austria, Japan and we even have a song highlighting Christmas of the American southwest.

In other words, these are diverse contributions and I think it represents...

Lessons from Louann

Posted 04-06-2013 at 10:45 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I don't think we've had a bigger shock on MMC than when we heard today of the sudden passing of Louann Jeffries, aka caninemom3.

While death means different things to different people it pains me to see so many taking the loss of Louann so deeply.

How could you not?

As I think of my journey with Louann I smile, I cry, and I laugh. She had that way about her.

She was a child. She was a tender heart. She was genuine to the core.

I was looking tonight through my private messages and emails from Louann over the years. It has again taught me how far reaching these relationships are online.

So rarely do we ever meet. Never, it seems, do we get to hear the voice or see the face or experience the smile of each other.

Louann had a way of making you forget all that. You could hear her voice or feel her smile through her constant messaging and reaching out. She never turned it off.

I think...

The World's Largest Christmas Party -- Again!

Posted 09-16-2012 at 11:20 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

Tucked away in a dark corner of the Merry Forums is a discussion area off-limits to most the merry faithful -- a private little get away for the Christmas Crew.

I set the area up years ago. I was attempting to follow the advice of forum managing webmasters who ran big communities. We weren't big, by any stretch of the imagination, but I thought we'd get there and we would need a place to discuss all the thorny issues of running a public gathering place.

Alas, our deliberations over forum member fights, spammers, grossly over-opinionated posters and other nasty elements so often associated with Internet communities never really took root in our crew areas. Folks at Christmas, it appears, are altogether too nice. By and large we don't have many problems to deal with.

So our crew area has become more of a giant brain-storming area for My Merry Christmas. Our prolific Christmas Crew -- the very cream of our membership, in fact -- come by when they...

More Than Just a Day

Posted 09-11-2012 at 12:20 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

Over on Facebook I'm seeing lots of images and reminders of 9/11. Most of the sentiments say something to the effect of "Never Forget".

That seems a little too little when it comes to talking about that day. I forget how small my children were then and how young so many folks I know now were on that fateful day.

Maybe it makes me sound old. But I just cannot forget that day. And I think it is important we all share and archive our personal stories from that day.

Everyone has a personal story from that day. You didn't have to be in New York to be affected by it.

For me, the Internet makes the world so much smaller. And it was so true that day, too.

I was in Utah and it was a busy morning. I was preparing for what was called then my "Christmas Meeting". I worked for a retailer whose business was tied to a successful Christmas selling season and it was the biggest meeting of the year for me.

I was new with...

Are we weird?

Posted 12-20-2011 at 04:05 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

I received an email from a site user who saw this article from The Atlantic asking Why are Christmas Sites So Weird?

My Merry Christmas is mentioned in the article but they didn't say anything about us other than to mock our toll free number, 877-Net-Xmas. (I had no idea that was weird).

Are we weird?

You know what I think is weird? I think a publication that makes a blanket statement and then doesn't back it up is weird.

I think it is weird that they would write an article with links and everything and then make no effort whatsoever to contact the people who run those weird websites.

They think it is weird that we all have a countdown to Christmas feature on the site.

What's so weird about that?

If they knew anything about people who love Christmas they'd know that is a vital feature to the website. People love to countdown to Christmas.

What's so weird about that?...
