The Top Ten Things I Love About These Forums

Posted 05-28-2008 at 08:01 PM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

It has been a whale of a day. I have recently received a pretty major change to my worklife and this week has been entirely out of control. Normally I can shut down my work a bit at this time of year and concentrate more on what my plans are for Christmas online. I'm not sure if this is going to happen for me this year.

But as I logged on here tonight after a difficult day I was pleasantly surprised to find a mountain of email, several private messages and a couple of hundred posts all waiting for me as a result of these forums.

All work, right?

Nope. Not at all. It is music to my ears, a balm to a work-weary soul.

These forums could never be work to me.

It got me thinking: was it is about coming here? I pondered that a bit and here's just the tip of the iceberg -- a top ten of why I love this place, starting with #10:

10. Traffic. City sidewalks, busy sidewalks...good grief, that's us. Here it is just...

Videos, Blogs and Groups -- Oh My!

Posted 05-26-2008 at 01:32 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

While working to install video capability over the long Memorial Day weekend I received an email from a friend of mine about the site.

"Will you stop already?" she wrote. "You're like a possessed mad-man with all this stuff. Am I going to be able to check my bank account on MMC next?"

Hmmmm. There's a thought.

Ok, so I'm laying it on a little thick here.

But honestly, folks. Can we really have too much Christmas here?

The video thing is a hoot to me. Yeah, I know, it has the potential for trouble. And we'll have to do a job to keep an eye on things.

But in working to get some videos posted just so that folks get the general idea about the video capabilities of MMC I've had the best time.

And dang if it hasn't put me in the mood for Christmas.

Media can do that to us, you know. Seeing an original theatrical trailer for A Christmas Story or even watching Mr. Bean fumble with...

Friends of My Merry Christmas

Posted 05-17-2008 at 09:50 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

Nobody understands me.

Nobody in the vast community of webmasters, that is. It's not that I am a rebel when it comes to running a website. I just don't view myself as a webmaster. I just love Christmas.

Quite honestly, the best sites on the Internet are those put together by individuals who have a love of their subject matter. Like a good book or a good magazine, a great website is reflective of the passion for it.

Most webmasters don't understand me because I'm not running this website like a website is supposed to be run. We're not trying to make money here, basically.

So when it comes to certain things we just don't do things they way most websites "should".

For example, we have a lot of friends.

We think (well, we know) that MMC has the best Christmas forums on the Internet.

But we're also associated with great Christmas forums at Talk Christmas, Magical Holiday Home, Clausnet,...

Taking These Forums to a Whole New Level

Posted 05-07-2008 at 10:10 AM by Jeff Westover (A Merry Blog)

This is my time of year for making tweaks and additions to My Merry Christmas. It amazes me that after nearly ten years operating this web domain we still have so much of Christmas we haven't covered.

Just to give you a little history, My Merry Christmas as a site was established in October 1999. We existed offline and on other web domains dating back to 1991. Can you believe that next year we get to celebrate 10 years as MMC?

I am a writer at heart and I love Christmas so it is no wonder we ended up doing this.

I don't have trained technical expertise in website programming and, honestly, I lose money on this endeavor as a whole every year.

Over the years I have looked at this as my hobby -- a labor of love, if you will. As I have learned more about the Internet and as our community here has grown I've decided that some day I want to retire into doing this full-time, year round.

But only after the babies are grown...

A Merry Blog

Welcome to the first ever blog entry here on MMC.

Those who know me know that I'm a habitual blogger. Perhaps it is just the socialite in me or perhaps I'm merely a verbose voyeur. Whatever. Blogging is just cool.

I'm curious more to see how folks here use these blogging capabilities than what I may contribute myself. When it comes to public spewing over Christmas I'm pretty well covered between the forums and all the Christmas sites I'm associated with.

But you never know.

Maybe we'll get Jay to expound on how to conduct ourselves at the company holiday party (no companies hold Christmas parties anymore).

Or, perhaps we'll get SC to teach us the fine art of white beard application (and removal, of course).

Or maybe we'll get Jinglebelle to stop in an pontificate about Christmas in the snowless regions of the south.

Whatever.

And that, ultimately, is what blogging is...
