A Winters Walk

A Winters Walk
Written by V. Rodney Harrison Jr. – 10-20-2011

The wind plays along the trail making the limbs creak slightly,
And the sun struggles to peak through the gray sky overhead.
Tis a day for a journey lead by nature’s cool touch,
A chapter in life, that to this day that has been unread.

Dense branches on soaring trees are now covered in crystal,
Mother Nature’s sparkling tinsel in its most natural state.
All the leaves have long since fallen and are buried deep below,
Beneath the fresh snow that has covered all that lies in wait.

The ice covered stream no longer runs freely as the wind blows by,
Frozen in time is the water that once flowed through the lands.
A heavy sheet of ice now serves all, as an arctic seasonal bridge,
Allowing passage, that before, was not well within hand.

In the distance there is movement alongside a powder covered shrub,
A majestic

She Has My Eyes….

She Has My Eyes….
Written on September 13th, 2011 by V. Rodney Harrison Jr.

With warm coffee in hand while gazing through the window,
I watch the snowflakes dance quietly from the sky.
And I daydream back to kind memories of my childhood,
Of more simple days long since been passed by.

With a deep breath that amounts to a reminisce sigh,
My soul reclaims memories of Merry Christmases past.
I can recall how ever carefree life appeared to be,
And how innocence would seem to eternally last.

The warmth of the fireplace burning freshly chopped wood,
With the sweet aroma of sugar cookies baking nearby.
My friends at the door chanting “hurry – let’s go!”
As I grab scarf and sled and kiss Mommy goodbye.

Family at the dinner table telling stories and laughing,
Grandma’s turkey and dressing abundantly filling us all.
Night services at the church as we thank God for our Savior,

The Season Is Upon Us (more lunchtime poetry)

The Season Is Upon Us
By V. Rodney Harrison Jr. – 12-14-2010

As the winter chilled winds gust even stronger,
And the frosty temperature continues to descend.
Once again my eager mind becomes familiar,
As if finally returning - was a long lost friend.

The blessed season of generosity has returned,
A time of care for our struggling - fellow man.
Time to share with the world ones peace and good will,
And to bring to all around all the joy that we can.

A tranquil smile extends across my content face,
As memories from my childhood warm me from within.
Of anticipation for the arrival of the beloved Saint Nick,
And of the account of our Savior who had no room at the Inn.

Warm cider and hot chocolate enjoyed by a cozy fire,
Plump marshmallows and chestnuts roasting close in hand.
Majestic gifts from the heart being given to one another,
Completed with mistletoe...

With a Heart of Gold

Posted 10-19-2010 at 10:16 AM by rodmonster

My wifes Grandmother (our Maw Maw) has her 90th birthday coming up and we were asked to write something about her for her Birthday book they are putting together.
I wrote this from the grandchildren’s perspective. Even though I have only know her for 18 years of my life….i know how she has been with the rest of the grandchildren for all of their lives……

With a Heart of Gold
By V. Rodney Harrison Jr. – 11-19-2010

The special role of a Grandmother is one that never ends,
Both, great strength and loving patience are required.
A mentor, with enduring understanding and dedication,
Heartfelt care and brilliant kindness are too desired.

A Grandmother is woman who throughout her accomplished life,
Has at one time or another – seen and done it all.
Yet can still be with you for your new adventures and journeys,
And help guide you no matter the experience you befall.

Yet there is lagniappe...

Christmas on Main Street

more lunchtime poetry.....

Christmas on Main Street
by V. Rodney Harrison Jr. – 10-14-2010

As the snow silently drifts down on each passerby,
A brisk wind flows down the snow covered walkways with ease.
Folks all about with merriment in their warmed hearts,
From the blinking lights hung high and the tinsel covered trees.

Five and Dime windows are full of jovial decorative displays,
With themes of St. Nicholas and his Significant Other.
Of board games and toys for children of every age,
As well as festive grand gifts for both - father and mother.

Shoppers follow in line with their newly found treasures,
Wrapped packages snug and stacked tall in their arms.
Brightly colored bows with fresh cut ribbon flowing free,
Adorn their thoughtful gifts, so full of precious charms.

Laughter fills the streets from children gliding by,
Over ice covered cobblestone of...
