Seasons of Change

Seasons of Change
By V. Rodney Harrison Jr. – 10-07-2010

Fresh buds of flowers blooming throughout,
With a scent of honeysuckles in the warm wind.
Color filled rainbows escort mists of rain,
While blue birds with their nests begin to tend.

A cool plunge in a stream as the sun pours down,
Cold homemade ice cream for all that desire.
A faint trace of freshly trimmed lawns in the air,
Beach nights of friends and cool drinks by a fire.

Leaves falling gracefully to the cool brisk ground,
With vibrant colors full of orange, yellow and red.
The days light grows shorter to auburn shaded dusks,
Chilly nights accompany a harvest moon over head.

Chimneys at full throttle keeping those inside so warm,
Homes covered from top to bottom with twinkling lights.
Freshly baked cookies being happily consumed,
Snow falling softly through the silence of starry nights.

Tricks and Treats

Some more lunchtime poetry....

Tricks and Treats
By V. Rodney Harrison Jr. – 10-3-2010

Chimneys at work with warmth in their scent,
Brightly colored leaves freely dancing in the wind.
With burnt skies of orange becoming more dim,
The echoes of the day are now coming to an end.

The cry of a black cat that almost pains the ear,
A goblin dashing by with great speed.
Spirits roaming freely up and down the lanes,
Enough to make ones skin crawl and bleed.

This is the night for sneaky tricks of all sorts,
Of bobbing for juicy apples with glee.
With great disguises to confuse and surprise,
In hopes to venture on a tasty sweets spree.

The eerie sounds of old haunted dwellings,
Give way to children’s laughter and screams.
Of excited first timers surveying the streets,
Constructing their plans and thinking up schemes.

Tonight’s prize is...

A Season for Joy

A Season for Joy
By V. Rodney Harrison – 9-30-2010

In the frosty distance one can faintly hear,
The soft ring of harmonic bells.
Chiming and dancing ever so gingerly,
On stallions trotting through the swells.

Sleigh rides with snuggled lovers,
Drifting gracefully through a snow covered trail.
Warm mitten covered hands gently clasped,
As their adoring hearts begin to sail.

Light fluttering flakes fall from the night sky,
Mixed with shimmering stars from above.
Melting swiftly on the rosy cheeks,
Of those riding who are blissfully in love.

From the sleigh one may catch a glimpse,
Of children gliding over a frozen stream.
Joyfully laughing at one another,
As they race to be the winning team.

Or perhaps the site of an open fire,
Crackling in the wind with chestnuts alight.
Family and friends with steaming cocoa in hand,
Singing...

A Knock at the Door from Autumn

Posted 09-28-2010 at 10:02 AM by rodmonster

A Knock at the Door from Autumn

Like clockwork it has arrived,
The distinct scent of vanishing jade.
Leaves dancing as they fall from high,
Vibrantly colored before they fade.

The brisk breeze is dashing all about,
Carrying the plush foliage to-and-fro.
Grand peaks of color encircle the trees,
As the burnt dusk begins to glow.

Seasonal gourds of all sizes and shapes,
Cover vine laden plains as far as one can see.
Shadows cast from the sinking auburn sun,
Via rays of light through the sagging bare trees.

A faint aroma from chimneys afar,
Trickles through the end of the day.
Giving a sense of warmth from deep within,
Evoking childhood memories of yesterday.

As this twilight arrives with a sea of stars,
As it has done each and every year before.
With much content in my tranquil soul,
I welcome Autumn knocking at my door…

At least one good Christmas in the 80s....

Posted 09-23-2010 at 09:35 AM by rodmonster

My family is a bit weird with Christmas.. My little sister is a bit indifferent, and my Mom, Dad, and little Brother...although EXTREMELY religious (Dad is an Education Minister and Brother is a Youth Minsiter)......don't share the feelings i have for Christmas. They love and respect it from the Biblical sense only and don't like anything else past that point...in fact they don't even put a tree up anymore - more less decorate. The don't like me buying them presents ...etc....get the idea?
As kids - we did have a small tree and we did get a few things though... although my dad had a weird way of doing it. He preferred that the gifts were needed things and as we got older - we had to pay for half of what we wanted so we "learned responsibility and that money does not grow on trees...blah blah blah...". Yes i said we paid for half of many of our gifts....so we kinda knew what we were getting...
Needless to say my kids are a bit spoiled at Christmas - as is my wife...and...
