Tart Cherry and their Health Benefits
Cherries are part of a group of fruit, which include plums, apricots, nectarines, and peaches. There are two types, sweet and tart. Although both have great uses, it is the tart cherry from Michigan that gets the most press of health benefits. The tart cherry is darker because of the high anthocyanin content . It is this compound that has anti-inflammatory effects. It works by blocking two enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2, the same as anti-inflammatory pain medications.
Uses for Tart cherry:
Recent studies done at University of Michigan, University of Arizona and Brunswick labs have also shown drinking eight ounces of tart cherry juice daily for four weeks significantly reduced important markers of inflammation and cardiovascular risk in a study of 10 overweight or obese adults.
Tart cherry juice can be purchased at all nutrition stores, and at some grocery health food sections.
Since the juice is tart it is helpful to mix it in a smoothie drink.
2 cups frozen tart cherries
1 ripe banana, peeled
1 cup cherry juice blend (or other juice)
Put frozen cherries, banana and cherry juice blend in container of electric blender or food processor. Puree until smooth. Serve immediately.
