Possible Health Benefts of Vitamin D 3
Vitamin D is found in many dietary sources, such as fish, eggs, fortified milk, and cod liver oil. The sun also contributes to the daily production of vitamin D, and as little as 10 to 30 minutes of exposure without sunscreen is thought to be enough to prevent deficiencies. The term "vitamin D" refers to several different forms of this vitamin. Two forms are important in humans: ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Vitamin D2 is synthesized by plants. Vitamin D3 is synthesized by humans in the skin when it is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from the sun. Supplements are also used when trying to overcome a deficiency and or for disease prevention.
Some people are surprised that they are in need of supplements, despite spending time in the sun, as the skin does not synthesize D as well as others.
Vitamin D3 blood levels should be evaluated to see if you are deficient or if you are interested in disease prevention.

Certain pregnancy related infections such as bacterial vaginosis, which is linked to premature labor and death of infants, can be prevented by increasing the level of Vitamin D in the body.
Certain types of cancers that older men are prone to such as prostrate and colon cancer.
Men with sufficient levels are believed to have less heart attack and stroke.
Arteriosclerosis is believed to be less.
A study published in the February 2009 Archives of Internal Medicine involving 1900 adults and children done by the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, found that people with the lowest blood vitamin D levels reported having significantly more recent colds or cases of the flu. The risks were even higher for those with chronic respiratory disorders, such as asthma and emphysema. They reported that asthma patients with the lowest vitamin D levels were five times more likely to have had a recent respiratory infection; while among COPD patients, respiratory infections were twice as common among those with vitamin D deficiency.
Another study published March 2010 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that those in the group of 167 children taking 1,200 international units of vitamin D3 supplements daily in winter were 42% less likely to get infected with seasonal flu than those who were given a placebo.
Growing body of research suggests that vitamin D might play some role in the prevention and treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes , hypertension , glucose intolerance , multiple sclerosis and other medical conditions .

I am taking D3 supplements. You would think with summer here there would be no way I am deficient of this vitamin but it's just WAY TOO HOT to get outside to absorb some sunshine but I try to get a little when I can.
The days are getting shorter and less sunshine. It's that time of year that we need the Vitamin D supplements more than ever!
I take D3 when I think about it. My doctor actually had me on a prescription for it for awhile because my level was low.
