Well, it's been a couple of weeks now since the gout episode and the "come to Jesus" talk I had with myself about my health. Since that time I've been eating mostly fruits and veggies, something I find pretty easy to do during the summer.

Last night, in fact, I had my first red meat in two weeks. I have to admit, it was dang good.

I feel ok though and while I'm not getting on a scale Sandy assures me I'm dropping weight.

Some days, especially with the heat, I feel all I'm fueled by is water. I don't really have much of an appetite to speak of. My biggest concern is getting through the middle of the day when I have to be out. Eating on the go is such a big pain -- so hard to find the foods you're looking for. I'm not much of a restaurant guy but maybe I need to be. You just can't eat all that healthy at a fast food place.

I know it means trouble but food is really a burden for me right now. Not eating is not good. But sometimes it is just easier.

Jeff, I think you might be going through a bit of a funk because of the realization that by necessity, your diet has to change. This too will pass as you start to discover that there are many foods yet to be discovered that won't upset the apple cart and still are appealing to your taste buds. The main thing to remember is that food is not your enemy. Portion control and having treats in moderation is the key along with staying on the move with the exercise component of this lifestyle change. YOU CAN DO IT!
As far as fast foods go, etc...remember that even McDonalds has choices, apple walnut salad, green salads, apple dippers, etc. Keep some granola bars that you like as well as some of your favorite nuts and dried fruits with you as you travel to hold crazy hunger at bay. Don't stop eating! Hang in there!

Thanks, momnan30. I hope I'm not giving the wrong impression. I'm doing fine with it all. I just find eating healthy while being active to be more work than I anticipated and in the effort to not eat wrong I find myself not eating at all some days. I know that's not right.

I'm a bit disappointed that I'm not feeling this great dynamic change. Not that I was feeling that bad before, honestly. But I thought by working on improving my diet, sleeping with more regularity (I'm getting 6.5 hours a night now, up from the 4 to 5 I was getting before) and exercising that I would feel much better than I do. But I find my energy levels still taxed especially in the heat.

I'm not turing back though. Starting this during the summer, for whatever reason, is easier. I find fall and winter foods to be my comfort foods and likely my "worst" time of the year. So if there's a relapse coming that's when it will happen.

When I was younger I could lose weight by just thinking about it. Not quite the case these days!

It does start out as a chore to eat healthy but it becomes easy and a habit.

I agree that eating at fast foods is very difficult and I usually settle for a salad but those are not always too filling since they usually just have some iceberg lettuce and a few tomatoes. I am use to using tons of veggies on my salad and beans to add protein. Your best bet is to find a restaurant that has a salad bar that you can do take out and that way you can get a good filling healthy salad and your choice of toppings!

I agree with the whole energy thing! I am about to spill my guts on that one soon when I have time. One of the main things I corrected through eating changes is getting rid of the stomach issues but still fighting fatigue no matter how many LOADS of good food and supplements I put in my system. There has been some improvement but I expect more! I guess more doctor visits are heading my way soon. Don't mean to go off topic about me and I will get into that one later with this group for some help. I won't go back to old ways of eating because it was a lot harder on my system and I could barely get out of bed.

I think in your case you have only gone on this route for a short time and it might take a few more weeks to feel some improvement. In my case I should have felt that long ago. It's been over 2 years for me.

Keep up the good work, Jeff!

I have had 6 interuptions while trying to type this. Kids are busy! That's why I am tired. Ha ha! I can't wait until I can participate in the Healthy topics again.

When it comes to food and eating, I'm not a patient person. Between a full time job and MMC, I work easily 15-18 hours a day and other than dinner time with my family -- which I know my wife makes balanced and healthy -- eating is a real burden for me.

I have an allergy to tomatoes -- a mild one -- and eating them fresh is really an issue. Cooked, not so much. Most salads "out there" tend to focus on lettuce, tomatoes and carrots. I don't care much for beans on my salad, though I do love beans. Nuts are more of my topping of choice, sunflower seeds mostly or pumpkin seeds. But finding a salad I like that doesn't have the fresh tomatoes and DOES have what I want without all the dressing slopped on it is really a tough thing to find.

So far, my best lunches come from a quick trip to the grocery store to grab something from the produce department.

I'm really missing fresh sandwiches, which I can no longer have due to the gout. Deli meats are high in whatever they call that stuff that gives you gout....

I suggest veggie subs and sandwiches? They are very tasty and filling if you add avocado to them. Subway has really good ones! I can finally have them from Subway since they now have gluten free bread.

Yes, I am allergic to gluten. They have a lot of gluten free products but most are expensive. A lot of restaurants do not have too many gluten free alternatives so it makes it difficult when I go out to eat. I manage though. =)

loosing weight is hard work! I have lost 40lbs + 3 times now, unfortunately I gained most of it back again after each loss.
I like the sound of this diet, something similar was what I was already following before I lost the trail and went the wrong way or something.
Need to get back on track too. Was at my TOPS meeting tonight and they are helping me to get going again. Support is what is important too, so with their support and that support here too, I know I can get going again!
