Christmas Receipts

As most of you will know, I am a registrar for births, deaths and marriages which means people come to me when they've had a baby, somebody's died or they want to get married. We also provide birth certificates, do genealogical searches, change of name, all that kind of stuff

This morning, we received a new batch of blank receipt rolls for the bank card machine; 30 ordinary and 10 with a Christmas theme. By Christmas theme, I mean it has very faint presents and holly etc on the paper and on the back it says "...taking card payments into the future.....MERRY CHRISTMAS! "

This has lead to the office vs me in a battle as to whether we use them. The argument is that it is very insensitive for those people registering a death. My take on it is that no matter where they go, Christmas will be there. It's something that they WILL have to deal with as they can't go into every store and ask them not to play music or to take down their decorations. Deaths are a very small part of what we do. My other half's mother died on Christmas Eve so it's not like my family hasn't been there. Regardless of how heartbroken you are, life goes on

Have I turned into a hard hearted b*tch or is everybody else over-reacting??

Some might view it as a rather unexpected reminder that their loved one won't be with them at Christmas anymore. It's so hard to predict how bereavement will affect different people. Some might take comfort in the holiday icons, and some might feel like it's rubbing in their loss, especially with the "into the future" reference.

I had a nasty email from a man a couple of months ago whose wife was a member here. They shared an email address and he was getting our newsletter and it upset him. I was as nice as I could be to him but he just lashed out at me like I had committed the crime of the century for sending an email to his dead wife who just didn't have the courtesy of notifying me of her passing.

Some people don't deal with death well. My guess is that you can't do anything right in some cases.

I say let Christmas be Christmas.

That's on the back of all the receipts - Christmas or not; it's preprinted on the paper - difference with this is it now has Merry Christmas and a few assorted Christmas symbols thrown on there too

What does the non-holiday paper say? Have a nice day?
