Something strange with Feliz Navidad that played on the radio???

Got a question!

In the mid 90's, my kids and I were listening to the radio and came across some local Dallas, Texas radio station. When we turned it on, Feliz Navidad was playing and it was during the summer. We thought it was strange and kept it on to see what was going on. As soon as the song ended they played it again and again and AGAIN! This went on for about a week (maybe longer) non stop! There were no commercials, DJ's, no explanation whatsoever. Just played Feliz Navidad over and over for days. At that time, before internet, I subscribed to the newspaper and read it everyday and watched the news everyday. I never heard or read anything about what was going on. Still to this day it's a mystery but it's something we got a good laugh out of.

I was wondering if this happened anywhere else and maybe it wasn't a local thing?

Stunting

More than likely the radio station to which you were tuned was going through a format change. Stations will often play all Christmas music or the same tune (Christmas or non Christmas) over and over for a period between formats.

This is known as “stunting” and is designed to get the attention of future listeners. It also gives the radio station time to fire, hire, and reorganize for the new programming. Christmas music is favorite stunt material, especially during Summer.

Our one local station did this a couple of years ago. They were switching from pop music to coutry music. They started playing christmas music on the first of october and then came back on janurary 1st as a country station.

Last year it was WMVN in St. Louis.

The link is dead. I think the format move didn't work for WMVN. Anyone know what they are up to these days?

I found a site for 101.1 EPSN sports radio in St. Louis. WXOS 101 ESPN, 101.1 FM. Is this the same one?

I guess we may assume the call sign changed as well. I seriously doubt 101.1 will be all Christmas anytime this season.
