You said it ... there's nothing quite like the films of the "classic" era of the 1930s and 1940s! Feature length, "B" pictures, or shorts, there's something about them that just can't be recaptured. Heaven bless the film preservationists!

I could hope for a Snow Day for that. I don't think it will happen but you never know. It does sound like fun!

My favourite old time Christmas film is "Holiday Affair", made in 1949 and starring Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh.
I was so hoping it would be on this Christmas in the UK but it doesn't look like it.

A few recommendations from a vintage movie buff:

1. "We're No Angels" (the original with Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, and Aldo Ray). It's the only Christmas movie in which you will see Bogart in a pink apron---and the only Christmas movie that will have you laughing at a poisonous snake! Give it a try. It's out on DVD, and you may be able to find it on TV.

2. "Star in the Night": If you have, or know anyone who has, the DVD of "Christmas in Connecticut," be SURE to watch this short that is included as an extra. It's the Academy Award winner for best short of the year. A beautiful twist on the Christmas story, with great acting and impeccable direction. You also might be able to catch it on TMC.

3. Last, but not least---the 1935 British version of "A Christmas Carol" (a.k.a. "Scrooge"), starring (Sir) Seymour Hicks. If you've read Dickens' book, you'll feel right at home with this movie. It capably captures the moods and scenes the way Dickens wrote them, with no Hollywood sugar-coating. It's easy to find on DVD because the film has fallen into public domain. But be sure to get the full-length 80-minute version, if possible, not the abridged version.

I saw that for the first time just a few years ago, and it quickly became one of my favorites. Beautiful performances from everybody! And I love the sermon at the end.
