Do not diet!!!!

Remember - healthy eating is a lifestyle NOT A DIET!!!
Diets re meant to go off and on.... you want to focus on the long term - not a short term....
I have perfected my own healthy way of eating that works for my body - but everyone is different.
Sometimes you have to try several different methods before finding one that works for you. Could take weeks or even months.
I am happy to go over what works for me and help you come up with ideas to work for you.

For a lot of folks there isn't an objection to the diet itself, Rod. I'll eat just about anything, even healthy stuff.

For me the issue is time, cost and convenience.

Workstyles being what they are eating well can be tough when you have a demanding job. For the better part of ten years I spent more than 45 weeks on the road. Everything was affected -- sleep, recreation, and especially food.

Early morning flights caused me to miss breakfast. That's a bad habit.

Life on the constant go meant buying prepared foods. That's a bad habit.

Dinners were often late, snacking was sometimes a meal, and water was often substituted for something else.

Since losing that job it has all become easier. But I have a long way to go.

I think breaking the habits is tougher than changing the diet.

I absolutely agree... Of course this is why i say it needs to be a life change. When i traveled alot i learned to prep meals in containers or to buy protein bars - etc by the box so i could carry with me. I dont travel as much now but my work weeks average between 50-60 hours... so i prep a week ahead of time now with healthy options i can leave at my office or bring along for the ride.
Its not easy making the change - but its worth it.
i also carry a spreadsheet with a large number of restaurants on it and the foods i can eat ... that way when out on business or travel all i have to do is pull it up off of my phone and order....

I so agree! I have lost 50lbs already eating healthy and doing lots of walking. I fall off the wagon from time to time, but get right back on again.
Just remember that healthy eating does not mean depriving yourself of what you enjoy. I occasionally enjoy baked goods and especially chocolate! Now it is is moderation rather than on a daily bases.

This may sound strange to some but I had to go for a healthy lifestyle to put on weight. I have been thin all my life then stomach issues kicked in and I was underweight. Eating certain things made my stomach problems worse and I had trouble eating. Now that I have adopted healthy eating habits, I got rid of stomach issues, can eat more and put on a few pounds that were needed. Since it's healthy food, I don't think I will have to worry about too much weight gain. I have maintained the weight I wanted since going this route.

My point bringing this up is, a habit of eating healthy is better than a "diet" and can benefit everyone including those who are thin.

I agree it is hard to get in the habit because grabbing a quick meal is so much easier but not always a healthy option. I started my healthy eating journey over 2 years ago. I have to work hard and felt like I spent a lot of time in the kitchen to make sure I have plenty of fresh unprocessed foods to eat. Just like Rod mentioned, prepare ahead of time. You will eventually get a routine down and it is easy once you do. I don't spend near as much time in the kitchen as I use to and can prepare ahead of time quick meals on the run.

INDEED! I actually take of Saturday and Sunday EVERY WEEK! This way i cheat a little and maintain a lot... =)

I agree about developing healthy eating habits and improving your lifestyle with some amount of fitness in your daily life.

I can walk home for lunch these days so that helps ensure a good meal. My husband used to pack my lunch which often contained raw vegetables and homemade dip or a medium-sized salad (dressing seperate) or a turkey sandwich or a container of soup.

I've recently inherited my father's cooking genealthough when he got hit by the cooking bug I was in my mid-teens (guess I'm a late bloomer). My husband cooks during the week and I dive in over the weekend. I enjoy the process of cooking: cleaning and slicing or chopping, pre-cooking meat so I can drain the grease before adding it to recipes (we buy lean or extra lean, but still drain the grease), I get excited adding different spices or herbs and the end result I know is healthier than anything I would ever get in a frozen box or at a restaurant.

I tried diets a few times in my life, but always found it difficult because there were so many rules to follow before you could see any progress and I always felt a bit deprived of certain things. In conversations with friends and relatives who have been on various diets, some found they lost weight, but because they didn't change their eating habits or add at least moderate exercise to their daily routines, the diets failed.

One of my secrets is to avoid adding extra sauces and gravies to food, believe it or not it tastes great without smothering everything in sauce. (I hear your cries over Christmas dinner - okay that's a sometimes thing not an every day use.) When it comes to salads, I use low-cal ones and lightly coat the ingredients rather - again I find the food tastes so much better.

Another trick I've learned over the years to put your fork down between bites. I guess that might sound a bit gluttonous, but truly your brain needs a minute to realize you are feeding your body and your stomach needs time to break it all down and send the message that it's receiving fuel.

I'll be offering more thougths, tips and recipes as time goes on.

I think for me, it's the hidden sugar in the foods I'm choosing that may often sabotage my efforts. I need to work on understanding that even though the granola bar has "healthy" sweeteners, or the fruit cup is in "lite" syrup, it's still SUGAR!
I agree,Rod, it's truly a lifestyle change that makes for success, not some diet that you cannot sustain over the long haul.

Find something healthy that tastes good

Often times, the challenge with eating healthy is in finding something that tastes good. Most of the healthy foods lack the pizazz, the sweetness and the salty tastes that we have all become accustomed to and that our bodies tell us we are craving and in need of.

I have a recipe that I like to use for cabbage soup. It's one of those recipes that leaves a lot of room for customization to individual tastes that still remains healthy. Of course it takes more time to prepare your own food but it's also a lot cheaper in the long run.

You can even add a little extra salt if you like.

Cabbage Soup


9 ingredients

6 large green onions
2 green peppers
2 cans diced tomatoes
1 bunch celery, chopped
1/2 head cabbage, chopped
1 pkg. Lipton onion soup mix
2 cubed chicken bullion
6 C. water
Season to taste with Salt and pepper

Simmer on low until the vegetables are soft.

Me too!!! I actually go off the wagon on Friday night & get back on Monday!! When I was losing, Saturday was my "cheat" day. Now that I'm maintaining, Friday night through Sunday have become my "cheat" days! I have read a lot about a good balance being eating healthy 80% of the time. And I also should say that everything I eat on the weekend isn't unhealthy, I just don't don't track so close, & I will eat some chips, or that brownie, and an extra piece of cheese! Mmmmm - I'm so glad it's Friday!
