We have no idea how it got there, but we have a STRONG feeling that the cat brought it in as a gift to us. She has been known to do that in years past, each time the animal control officer telling us that the cat probably did not actually "catch" the bats but probably found it. Right about the fifth time, animal control accepted the fact that our cat probably DID catch the bats. She had a habit of somehow getting onto our roof, and we think she swatted them and "caught" them after she stunned them. Anyway, the officer today did not even look at the bat (Hubby had put it into the trash can out back) and said the trash was the best place for it. Since we have had cases of West Nile virus in our area each year for several years, I am always cautious, especially because of the deaths of several people with West Nile virus and the death of a young man (a 20-something "kid") from the bite of a rabid bat; and I take the threat of bats very seriously. Also, after having gone through chemo and radiation within the past several months, I am cautious of ANY illness or threat of germs and/or viruses due to my lowered immune system. I was inside the house working on my stuff and the officer left without the bat. He had told Hubby that the county was "out of money" and could not afford the testing ($50) that would need to be done to find out about the bat. I explained to Hubby about my concerns and told him I would pay the $50 to give myself peace of mind. I called the officer and told him I wanted the bat tested, period. He came back to get the bat and tried to tell me that the virus of a rabid bat (normally) dies almost immediately upon contact with air. I checked online and found out that the virus can still be alive inside the bat and in his/her saliva. I did not want to take any chances whatsoever! I wonder what the officer would have done if he had small children and had found a bat in his house. Would he want it tested? I think he would, actually! One of the things that got me, I think, was his attitude, what I call the "Now, now, little lady" attitude. I was ticked off, especially since he put on gloves to pick up the bat after having told us there was nothing to be afraid of, that any virus would have already been dead!!! Anyway, I have to calm down. Do you think I am overreacting?
In view of the officer's inconsistent attitude (his actions seem to be more truthful than his words), I'd say you weren't overreacting. You don't mess around with the possibility of rabies, especially with low immunity.

Finally got out of there after 6 p.m. ... haven't gotten out before six all this week. It's nice that the agency is busy, but when it's to the tune of 9- to 9-1/2-hour days every day, it wears me down. Getting old, I guess.

Upon his rescue, he has a new view on life." I love all the malapropisms from Mrs. Mutterance (and she does mutter a lot!). You can buy it for $4.77, and it ships for free (Prime). I had NEVER heard it thunder during a snowstorm when I was a kid, so this movie seemed so odd to me because of the snow thunder and lightning!
How about that? I didn't know Sid Caesar was in a Christmas movie!

Merrymistletoe, so happy to hear that you are feeling better. Happy Birthday to Mama!!!

Seawaters, I do not think you were over reacting. Better safe than sorry!

Made, good news about your Mom. Praying she does well with the anti clotting drugs and finds another neurologist!

I am exhausted. We went to our fourth funeral in the past two weeks. Today's funeral was for a 57-year-old who had colon cancer. He was an ag pilot and fire department chief. I thought I would be okay until we walked into the cemetary and two fire trucks on opposite sides of the road had their ladders extended and touching at the top to form an inverted > with the point at the top. Crossing from one fire truck to the other and making an "A" was a cable from which was flying the American Flag. Very touching. So many police officers, federal government employees, and firefighters formed one group facing the family members. Then two fire trucks entered the cemetary, one being a really old fire truck with their antique bell. On the back platform where the firemen used to ride, was the casket. At the end of the funeral, ten ag pilots flew in "the Missing Man Formation." Reggie's plane was flown by a family member who then turned toward the west away from the rest of the formation. (Wikipedia explained it: The flight approaches from the south, preferably near sundown, and one of the aircraft will suddenly split off to the west, flying into the sunset. In all cases, the aircraft performing the pull-up, split off, or missing from the formation, is honoring the person who has died, and it represents their departure to the heavens.) Kelly was presented with Reggie's captain's helmet. Not many eyes were dry today. Then the interim captain rang the antique fire bell, signifying the "last call." (This was explained on Wikipedia: During each firefighter funeral, there is the ceremony of the "Tolling of the Bell," where bells gong in a succinct and traditional pattern. The bell ceremony is reminiscent of the original firehouse bells that tolled when there was a fire. The actual ceremony is based upon the pattern of the original method of communicating that a firefighter had fallen, which is the telegraph. The telegrapher would tap out the word "fell" with five measured dashes, a pause and then repeated two more times.) As I said earlier--very touching.
Sorry for your loss, you are in my thoughts.
