The BIG Keaton classic is "The General." Get Kino's special two-DVD set with extras; it includes the Carl Davis score. Most of the silent shorts are good starting points; best-known classics are probably "Cops" and "The Goat." Again, Kino will have the best source materials. Some will diss his Columbia and Educational sound shorts. They're not my favorites, but they're far from awful and deserve a look. A couple good ones are "Pest from the West" (Columbia) and "Grand Slam Opera" (Educational). Kino has the Educational shorts; Sony has the Columbia shorts.

He's not to everybody's taste, but I enjoy him more than Chaplin. (Such heresy!) Buster's not trying to be artsy or to convey any kind of subtext---he's just going for laughs. Most books about his films are pure B.S. written by film majors. Ignore them. Best book bios are by Tom Dardis (overview) and Marion Meade (in-depth). Many fans hate Meade's book because she is not a Keaton worshiper---she plays a little rough with him sometimes, but she has the research to back it up.

Here's a new Internet toy. You have to use Google's Chrome browser. I haven't tried it out, but it looks like fun. You add title cards to silent film clips (well, some clips are actually from sound films) by speaking into your computer's built-in microphone. The website transcribes your speech into title cards and allows you to save and share your "creations."

I will have to try the new internet toy! Sounds like something that could be addicting, though!

I am in the mood to watch some L&H this weekend. My favorite shorts are probably Helpmates and Blotto, so I may take a look at those this weekend.

I checked the TCM schedule for the week and looks like some good ones. Today is a Lon Chaney min-marathon in honor of his birthday (his 130th, if I'm doing my math right!).

Tonight, in honor of baseball's opening day, are some baseball comedies. One I've never seen but am excited about is "It Happens Every Spring." Has anyone seen that one?

TCM is the one channel i can sit and watch for hours and never get bored. The wife on the other hand hates it.

My wife is not a fan of it, either. To her, if a movie is in black and white it's probably not worth watching.

Speaking of black and white movies, there are some movies, in my opinion, that I don't want to watch in color. When they colorized It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street it drove me crazy. My dad had bought those on VHS colorized when I was a teen and I would adjust the settings on the TV to turn the color off so I could watch them in black and white. Crazy, huh? Some love those movies colorized and that's fine, I love them just the way they were made, black and white. It gives them the original vintage feel!

Amen! I'm not a fan of colorized versions, although I understand why some like them.

Some movies, like film noir mysteries, work best in black and white in my opinion...the shading and the shadows would be off if they were in color.
