In time for Valentines Day, I leafed through a copy of the old relationship chestnut "the Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman. I suppose that I was mulling over comments about the materialism of the holiday. In brief, the premise is that we express love in five main ways: gifts, time together, verbal affirmations, physically expressed affection, and helpful acts such as doing odious chores. The notion of the author is that no love language is better than another.

For fun and edification, my husband and I did a love languages test, and realized we were speaking different languages (physical affection versus gifts, but both of us ranked quality time a close second). It's been great trying out this new understanding, so I suggest anyone try it! A bunch of identical tests came up when I googled "love" "languages" "test."
