It was an exciting year for sharing Christmas around the world and in no way was it shared better than by way of social media. Of all the things shared we have combined the efforts of ShowUsYourChristmas.com and MyMerryChristmas.com to identify the top five Christmas videos of 2012.
These videos came to us from a variety of sources. There just isn’t any way you can see everything that everyone posts out there. But over the course of the season it is plain to see what catches the fancy of most and these, in our view, were the most popular videos of the season.
#5 -- The Mistletoe Prank
Posing as survey takers in a BYU library Kaitlin Snow and Nate Turley asked those they surveyed about the traditions of the Christmas season. When asked if they believed in the mistletoe tradition a sprig of mistletoe would appear – and the results were often hilarious:
#4 -- Gangnam Lights
The viral phenomenon of Korean artist Psy’s Gangnam Style video is an undeniable cultural statement on the year 2012 – and the influence of that work bled into Christmas as light decorators around the world could NOT resist the temptation of putting the song to lights, even though there is nothing remotely Christmasy about the song:
#3 -- Olivia Newton-John/John Travolta -- I Think You Might Like It
Former Grease co-stars John Travolta and Olivia-Newton John are nearing their sixties. Considered in many circles to be has-beens of both movies and music they do not garner much attention these days. But whatever possessed them to partner again to produce a Christmas album proved that whatever chemistry and collective talent they once had they still have. Using Newton-John’s longtime songwriter John Farrar’s snappy tune with plenty of smaltzy and corny video backup the duo launched the surprise hit of the 2012 Christmas season:
#2 -- Cee Lo Green – Mary Did You Know
Cee Lo Green promoted his 2012 Christmas album as a “sensual celebration of Christmas” and this song does nothing to back that statement up. In fact, it is a pretty brave departure for a popular recording artist to take on such a strong Christian theme at all. His vocals combined with the imaging of the video gave this rendition fuel during a weak season for new Christmas music. His vocals will give this song lots of replay in the years ahead. Watch:
#1 – O Come Emmanuel – The Piano Guys
The Piano Guys are a runaway YouTube sensation. For years Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson have released their musical mash-ups of classical music coupled with popular pop tunes. They have done everything from Bach to Coldplay and their offerings are incredibly popular, propelling the group to the top of the New Age charts in 2012. They released two versions of O Come, O Come Emmanuel, this one with footage again with a strong Christian theme. Look for decades of incredible Christmas offerings now that they have the support of Sony and national exposure from venues like The Tonight Show:
Honorable Mention – Richard Marx – Christmas Spirit
As songs go this song from Richard Marx’ 2012 Christmas album of the same name isn’t anything special. But the video is a ton of fun and features familiar faces old and new all showing their Christmas spirit via video probably shot, in most cases, with cell phones. It’s fun:
